Born in Vancouver, BC, Piper Maru is a London-based, self-taught mixed-media artist with a background in set and costume design.

She primarily uses her work as a personal exploration of the self and a means of processing her inner dialogue. Her themes are deeply personal, yet also universal. They touch on subjects such as the journey in finding one’s purpose, the societal pressure to ‘succeed', our relationship with ourselves, self-esteem, and the masks we collectively wear to present ourselves to the world. Ultimately, her work is about her personal devotion to finding connection, and joy amidst complexity.
In her recent series, 'Caught in the Loop', Maru presents 10 vibrant oil on wood panel paintings and 12 works on paper. She uses her own figure to explore her relationship with identity and tests the boundaries of how she presents to the world. She portrays a caricature of herself, her body adorned with an oversized mask of her own face. Whether set within a surreal landscape or suspended against abstract backdrops, her figures evoke a sense of searching and transformation - drawn to something greater than themselves.
